+3. JAN ROELOFSE was born about 1631 in the Province of Drenthe as proved by a document in Colonial Manuscripts of NY; Vol XXVII; p 136; which states that he was 48 years old on October 10, 1679, and a native of the land of Drenthe. Jan died abou t 1703. He married ADRINNA POLHEMUS born about 1644 in Brazil while her father, Rev. Johannes Theodorus Polhuemus was minister there; her mother is Catharina Van Werven. Jan emigrated to New Amsterdam; it is controversial when he arrived. It may h ave been as early as 1654 as this is found in the HISTORY AND COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL RECORD OF COUNTY OF KINGS AND CITY OF BROOKLYN NY 1683-1884; Henry R. Stiles: "the inhabitants of Midwout nominated six men in Apr 1654 from whom three were chosen to act as schepens of the village. In the absence of any Midwout records earlier that 1659, we cannot state postitively the names of these officers. We know tha t Adriaen Hegeman was appointed a local magistrate in 1654, and find his name on the earliest record of the village as serving still in the capacity of schepen. It is therefore reasonable to presume that the other men, whose names are found with h is on the record of July 2, 1959, were appointed schepens with him in 1654. If this is correct, then the first three local magistrates of Midwout were Adriaen Hegeman, Willem Van Boerum, Jan Sueberingh." Jan and Adrinna were members of the RDC, Midwout, until 1681 when they removed to Bergen NJ. Adrinna died before 1702; Jan married (2) Aeltje (unknown). Jacob Roelofse was born about 1634; married Maria Van Neste; and lived in the Raritan Valley of New Jersey as early as 1685. Daniel Roelofse was born about 1636; lived on the Raritan in 1699. |
