The "CRAIGE" spelling of the surname appears in his sons marriage bond. This John Craige/Craig Sr. is the father of our John W. Craig and his brother Charles. A Rockbridge County Tithes List shows our John Craige (John Craig Sr.) in 1778, and John Jr (W.) Craig shows up in 1785. At present, nothing is known of their where-abouts prior to that. Rockbridge County Va. was formed from Botetourt and Augusta Counties in 1778. Botetourt was formed in 1770 from Augusta, then split in 1778. In 1737, John Lewis, a native of Dublin Co., Ireland, secured a grant of land (Borden's Grant) covering ha lf of what is now Rockbridge Co. In 1737, Bordens Grant was in Orange County (it now lies within Rockbridge County). To settle-up and secure the land he, brought in around one hundred families from Scotland, the border counties of England and th e north of Ireland |
