His father was also called Pierre Charles when in Guadeloupe. Effectively, this man born 1785 was Charles Peter Beaujean Jr. In Massachusetts, he was called Charles Baujean, the same as his father. The Guadeloupe baptismal record calls this a legitimate birth, but the parents didn't marry in the local Catholic church until 1787. The parents had previously been married in Boston in 1784 in a Protestant or civil ceremony - generally not recogn ized by Catholics. Charles moved to Newburyport,Essex Co., Massachusetts in 1800 with his mother Lucy and younger brother Sylvester following the death of his father in Guadeloupe in 1799. On 10 October 1800 the Essex Co., MA court assigned Captain Jonathan Coolidg e as his guardian. Perhaps Charles was apprenticed at sea? Both his mother Lucy and Jonathan Coolidge died in 1806, their probates are consecutive court records. Charles and a Jon Coolidge were mentioned as having received bond from guardian Levi Mills in the court guardianship assignment record for little brother Sylvester in Newburyport in June 1808. Perhaps this Jon Coolidge alive in 1808 was a Jr.? No known US descendants of this Charles Beaujean. Perhaps he went back to Guadeloupe from Shaffer-Beaujean Genealogy Rootsweb World Connect |
